Before you start
Before any burn, you must make sure that burning is allowed that day. Check the open burn status on the Bay Area Air Quality Management District map.
Marin County Fire ONLY issues pile burn permits to properties in unincorporated Marin County. If you live in a city or fire district, please check with your local fire authority for permit requirements and regulations.
What to do
- Fill out and submit the application form.
- Don't burn until we have approved your permit. After we receive your form, our staff will conduct a site visit and review the information you sent us. You'll get a confirmation email when we approve your permit.
- Make sure you know how to burn safely. Before any burn, you must make sure that burning is allowed that day. Check the open burn status on the Bay Area Air Quality Management District and for a complete list of regulations.
To make sure your burn is safe:- Only burn dry, natural vegetative material;
- Do not burn any trash, painted wood or other debris;
- Do not burn on windy days;
- Have appropriate tools and a water source nearby;
- An adult is required to tend the fire at all times.
What's next
You are required pay a fee of $199 to the Bay Area Air Quality Management District. Use their online form to notify the Air District. This permit is valid for up to one year.
