Body of News Release

San Rafael, CA – Ballots for the November 5 General Election were sent to all active registered voters in Marin County on Monday, October 7, and mailed distribution of the county voter information guide started in late September. Unregistered voters in Marin still have time to get registered and participate in this election.

Early voting started October 7 at the Elections Department in Suite 121 Marin Civic Center at 3501 Civic Center Drive in San Rafael, and several official ballot drop boxes were open around the county on October 8.

Registrar of Voters Lynda Roberts said the department recently mailed an information card to voters with the list of vote centers and drop boxes.  Locations are also published in the voter information guide and online at marinvotes.org. She reminds voters that they may go to any vote center in Marin County if they need or want in-person services.

Roberts asks voters to keep these key dates in mind.

  • October 21: The last day to register to vote in this election.
  • October 22: Starting on this day and until 8 PM Election Day, eligible residents who are not registered must go to a vote center to register and vote. Check online for locations and dates and hours of operation.
  • October 26:  Four vote centers will be open.  Check online for locations and hours of operation.  Additional vote centers open on November 2.
  • October 29: The last day the Elections Department can mail a ballot. After this day, voters wishing to vote must get a ballot in person at any vote center.
  • November 2: Nineteen vote centers will be open through Election Day. Check online for locations and hours of operation.
  • November 4: An additional voter center opens. Check online for locations and hours of operation.
  • November 5:  Election Day. All twenty-one vote centers will be open from 7 AM to 8 PM. Ballot return envelope must be signed and postmarked on or before this day or dropped in an official ballot drop box or at any vote center by 8 PM. Ballot drop boxes and vote centers close precisely at 8 PM. Check www.marinvotes.org for locations.

If a voter has not received their voter guide or ballot by October 16, they may contact the Elections Department by calling 415-473-6456.

A voter unable to return their vote-by-mail ballot may designate someone to return it for them by filling out the short form at the top of the ballot return envelope, signature side. These ballots must be returned within 72 hours. Voters may call 415-473-6456 if they have questions or concerns.

“I strongly encourage voters to only designate someone they know and trust,” Roberts said.

Roberts also reminded voters to sign their return envelope or else the Elections Department cannot process the ballot. Voters will receive a letter if their signature is missing or doesn’t compare with their voter registration form so they can fix the problem. Roberts asks voters to complete and return the letter right away so the Elections Department can process the ballot.
