Courses at College of Marin
Over the course of 12 months, you'll take these courses:
- Fire Protection Organization (FIRE 110). This course is CSU transferable and is equivalent to the SRJC Fire 71 fire academy prerequisite course and the CCSF Fire Science 50 prerequisite course. This 3-unit course provides an introduction to:
- Fire protection and its history
- Career opportunities in the fire service and related fields
- The function of public and private fire protection services
- Fire service nomenclature
- Basic fire chemistry and behavior
- Fire protection systems
- Strategy and tactics for building construction
- Advanced First Aid/Fire Responder (EMR) (FIRE 215). This course is equivalent to the SRJC EMC100 Fire Academy prerequisite and CCSF Fire Science 17 Fire Academy prerequisite. This 3-unit introductory course is designed for people interested in Fire Responder Training. This class teaches the basic skills needed to give care at the scene of an emergency. The course includes:
- Basic anatomy and body systems
- Lifting and moving patients
- Airway management
- Patient assessment
- Terrorism awareness
- An overview of the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) system

Firefighting Conditioning (Kin 170). This course is designed to develop functional fitness required for firefighters and law enforcement personnel through a series of traditional strength and conditioning protocols, as well as individual and group task-based activities. Best practices, methodology, and application of functionally-specific physical requirements appropriate to careers in Firefighting, Law Enforcement, and rescue services will be emphasized.

Emergency Medical Technician 1 (EMT) (FIRE 112). This is a 7-unit course that provides 170 hours of instruction in the theory and skills required for an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-1). After this course, you’ll be ready to sit for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) certification exam. 24 hours of supervised clinical experience with emergency ambulance and hospital emergency room staff are included.
